Replacing missing teeth with dental implants

Dental implants can be used to replace one or more missing teeth. An implant is placed in the jawbone and can support a crown, bridge or removable denture.

At Harcourt Dental Clinic in Dublin, we start by assessing your teeth, gums and bite and listening to what you would like help with. We explain whether implants may be suitable and discuss alternatives, such as a bridge or denture.

The aim is to help you understand your options, what treatment would involve and the care needed afterwards.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do dental implants work?

A dental implant has three main parts:

  • The implant itself (a titanium post placed in the bone).
  • An abutment (a connector between the implant and the tooth).
  • The final restoration (a crown, bridge, or denture).

After the implant is placed, a healing period allows the bone to integrate with the implant. This creates a stable foundation for the final restoration.

What can implants be used for?

Dental implants can be used to replace:

  • A single missing tooth.
  • Several missing teeth are restored with an implant-supported bridge.
  • All teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
  • Dentures that need additional support and stability.

The type of restoration depends on the number of missing teeth, bone availability, and overall treatment plan.

Why replace missing teeth?

Replacing missing teeth is not only about appearance. Missing teeth can lead to:

  • Difficulty chewing.
  • Movement of neighbouring teeth.
  • Changes in the bite.
  • Bone loss in the jaw over time.

Implants can help maintain bone levels and restore function more predictably than some alternative options.

What affects the cost of dental implants?

The cost depends on the number of teeth being replaced, the type of replacement teeth and whether any preparatory treatment is needed. Following assessment, we explain the suitable options and provide a full costing for the proposed treatment before you decide how to proceed. We also discuss ongoing care and maintenance.

About implants

Are implants suitable for everyone?

Not all patients are immediately suitable for implant treatment. We assess:

– Bone volume and bone quality.
– Gum health.
– Medical history.
– Smoking and oral hygiene.
– Bite forces and overall dental condition.

In some cases, additional procedures such as bone grafting or gum treatment may be required before implants can be placed.

Planning your treatment

We plan the replacement teeth and implant placement together. Where more than one clinician is involved, we explain who will carry out each stage and how your care will be coordinated.

Planning is key

Successful implant treatment depends on careful planning. This includes:

  • X-rays and, where clinically indicated, a 3D CBCT scan to assess the bone and surrounding structures.
  • Digital scans to evaluate tooth position and bite.
  • Designing the final tooth position before implant placement.

Implants are planned around the final restoration, not the other way around.
