Root canal treatment is a common and effective way to treat infection inside a tooth and allow it to be retained rather than removed.

Modern techniques mean that treatment is usually straightforward and far more comfortable than its reputation suggests.

What is root canal treatment?

Inside each tooth is a space containing nerves and blood vessels (the pulp). If this tissue becomes infected or inflamed — usually due to decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental work — it can cause pain, sensitivity, or swelling.

Root canal treatment removes the infected tissue, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent further infection.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does treatment involve?

Root canal treatment is usually carried out over one or more visits and involves:

  • Local anaesthetic to ensure comfort.
  • Accessing the inside of the tooth.
  • Removing infected or inflamed tissue.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting the root canals.
  • Sealing the canals to prevent reinfection.

Once the root canal is completed, the tooth is restored to function normally again.

Does root canal treatment hurt?

With modern techniques and local anaesthetics, root canal treatment is usually no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed. Most patients are surprised by how manageable the procedure feels.

Some mild tenderness afterwards is normal and usually settles within a few days.

Why is a crown often recommended afterwards?

Teeth that need root canal treatment are often weakened by decay or previous restorations. A crown is frequently advised to:

  • Protect the tooth from fracture.
  • Restore strength and function.
  • Improve the long-term success of the treatment.

Not every tooth needs a crown — this is assessed individually.

How long does a root canal-treated tooth last?

With proper restoration and maintenance, a root canal-treated tooth can last many years. Longevity depends on:

  • The quality of the root canal treatment.
  • The final restoration.
  • Bite forces and tooth wear.
  • Oral hygiene and regular review.

Is it better to remove the tooth instead?

Where possible, keeping your natural tooth is usually the preferred option. Root canal treatment allows this in many cases.

Can the infection come back?

While root canal treatment is highly predictable, no treatment has a 100% success rate. Good restoration and maintenance reduce the risk of reinfection.

Will the tooth change colour?

Some teeth may darken over time. This can often be managed with whitening or cosmetic restoration if needed.

Treatment

When is root canal treatment needed?

Root canal treatment may be recommended if you:

  • Have a persistent toothache.
  • Experience pain when biting.
  • Have prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold.
  • Have swelling or an abscess.
  • Have deep decay or a cracked tooth.

In some cases, there may be little or no pain, and the problem is detected on X-ray during a routine examination.

Planning and responsibility of care

Root canal treatment is usually carried out by your treating dentist. In more complex cases — such as difficult anatomy, persistent infection, or retreatment — referral to or collaboration with our specialist endodontist may be recommended.

Patient takeaway

Root canal treatment removes infection and saves teeth. When planned and restored properly, it is a reliable and effective solution.
