Fillings

Why do people need fillings?

Fillings are required when there is decay in the tooth, resulting in a cavity (hole). If this is not treated, bacteria can enter the tooth and cause infection and disease. If left untreated, this becomes increasingly painful and may result in the tooth requiring root canal treatment or worse complete loss of the tooth. As a result, it is recommended that you do everything possible to avoid dental decay, we encourage our patients to prevent decay with 6 monthly check-up visits.

Fillings can be used for a variety of reasons including

  • Fix a broken tooth
  • Remove decay and prevent problems in the future
  • Bonding to improve your smile (colour, shape and size of a tooth)
  • Close spaces between the front teeth
  • Replace grey amalgam fillings in the back teeth

Different types of fillings

There is a wide range of fillings available, making it simple to repair any cavities while staying within your budget. The three major types of fillings are

  • Amalgam fillings
  • Composite or white fillings
  • Porcelain fillings

Your dentist will be able to tell you how each type of filling differs and which filling is best suitable for your budget and needs.

How long do fillings last?

This is entirely dependent on the type of filling used. Tooth-coloured (composite) fillings are becoming increasingly popular because they are more discreet and blend in with natural teeth; however, they are frequently regarded as less durable when compared to amalgam fillings.

Composite fillings typically last between 10 and 12 years. Amalgam fillings last slightly longer, typically 15 years.

How much do fillings cost?

Due to the different types of fillings and materials used the cost of fillings vary. The cost for a standard composite filling ranges from €120 – €200.
