Crowns

A dental crown is a type of dental restoration that completely caps or encircles a tooth and is typically used to improve the strength or appearance of teeth. A crown can be used when a tooth is broken, worn, root filled or has a large filling that is too large to restore properly with a large filling.

A crown is usually bonded to the tooth using dental cement and can be made from many materials, which are usually fabricated by taking an impression of the prepared teeth.

There are three basic types of crowns:
1. All ceramic porcelain (EMAX or Procera used in this practice)
2. Gold crowns usually used on molar teeth where cosmetics are not as important but strength is
3. Metal/porcelain crowns that blends the cosmetics of porcelain and the strength and accuracy of Gold

Your dentist can advise you on the most suitable type of crown for you or whether an alternative treatment option is available.

Crowning a tooth involves 2 steps

On your first visit, your dentist will make an impression of the prepared tooth/teeth and this is sent to the laboratory where the crown is fabricated by technicians in the Laboratory and usually takes 10 days to 3 weeks to fabricate during which time a temporary crown is used to protect the tooth so it functions and looks normal.

Veneers

Veneers can be used to change the shape and colour of your teeth by using thin wafers of porcelain. These are custom made in a dental laboratory by a skilled technician that will blend different shades of porcelain to match the unique colours of your other teeth. Veneers can be used to change the shape or the colour of your tooth or multiple teeth. When bonded to the tooth, they are incredibly strong and can give a very natural lifelike restoration that mimics your own natural tooth. When choosing a veneer over resin bonding or bleaching, some of the advantages of this are that the porcelain itself will not stain at all over time. This means that your teeth may get darker and the veneer will stay the same colour.

Veneers at the visible or front part of the mouth are challenging to match with existing teeth and the quality of these veneers depend on the skill of the ceramist and dentist working together, to make the veneers look like natural teeth.
